Helmed by Huntsville, Alabama’s own David Broome, Gawshock’s new release ‘Leaves to the Sun‘ is an 11-track collection of lo-fi slacker rock and bedroom pop that is so breezy and short that it practically flies by before you even have time to contemplate life’s mysteries. Broome expertly balances bittersweet, jangly melodies with a homespun charm that makes you feel like you’re hanging out in a sunlit southern bedroom, listening to a friend pour their heart out through a pleasantly buzzy amplifier. It’s the kind of record that wraps you in a hazy, nostalgic blanket, refusing to overstay its welcome while somehow managing to lodge its hooks deep into your brain.

The album really hits its stride with tracks that lean into this beautifully unpolished, slow-churning atmosphere. A massive standout is “Heat Lightning,” which acts as a brilliant turn toward electric, crawling, empty-space slowcore. It creates a thick, humid soundscape with minimal ingredients, letting the space between the notes do the heavy lifting while perfectly capturing the quiet tension of a stormy Southern night. Then there is “What Do You Dream About?“, a shimmering melodic gem built around an understated indie framework. It delivers an absolute monster of a hook that functions as a gentle, repetitive question, making it impossible not to hum along to the hazy, analog textures surrounding Broome’s laid-back vocals.

The crown jewel, however, is the brilliant title track, “Leaves to the Sun,” which anchors the record’s emotional core with its delicate acoustic strumming and washed-out atmospheric effects. It features a wonderfully tender and slightly desperate lyrical refrain that sticks with you long after the track ends: “I wanna follow you wherever you go, Like leaves to the sun.” Coupled with the album’s opening track, “Brighter Hue,” which immediately sweeps you up in its short, focused run-time and colorful indie-pop charm. Leaves to the Sun‘ will be the album that you’ll want for this hot summer… where you have just enough time for one of those light blue kiddie pools for the backyard that only keeps half of your body in the water while you’re sippin on some cheap ice cold “in this economy” beers. So fucking good. Thank you, David… this album rules.
