‘Lovebirds’ by Birds Flying Backwards is a welcoming surprise to my ears this week, from start to finish. This six-piece London-based alt-country ensemble has managed to craft a delightfully sunny, 70s-style, indie-folk rockin’ with some slightly jammy kinda stuff that makes for a groovy record that feels completely lighthearted and endlessly joyful. The vocals blend beautifully as they roll through a rich, retro landscape that feels both welcoming and brilliantly upbeat.
‘Lovebirds’ serves up some absolutely scrumdiddlyumptious auditory treats, much like me treating myself to a red popsicle on an intensely warm day like today… or, even better, an ice cream sandwich, because let’s be real, that soft cookie-and-vanilla combo is just so good when the temperature spikes. That exact feeling of pure, simple refreshment is woven right into the tracklist, starting with “One Heartbreak to Another”, which kicks things off with a wonderfully bouncy rhythm that masks its sad lyrics with pure acoustic energy. “All I Need” slows things down into a deliciously tender, heartwarming embrace of a love song. At the same time, the standout track “Ain’t No Use in Cryin” leans gracefully into a classic, soulful alt-country duet that practically begs you to kick back, relax, and leave your worries behind.
All in all, ‘Lovebirds’ is a kick ass, feel-good record that proves Birds Flying Backwards is a band moving in the right direction, even if their band name playfully suggests otherwise. By mixing the right amount of soft-rock nostalgia with a fresh, friendly energy, they have delivered an album that feels less like a manufactured studio product and more like a warm hangout with your closest friends. It is a wonderfully positive addition to this year’s musical landscape, leaving you thoroughly refreshed and eagerly hitting repeat for just one more taste of summer. Just wish I had some more of those damn ice cream sandwiches in my freezer. Just check out this record… you won’t be disappointed.
