If your ears have been feeling dangerously sober lately, fear not, because Nebraska’s finest folk-punk veterans are back to kick down your door and pour some great tunes into your head. The Killigans have officially released one hell of a folk-punk revival release with This Is Only A Drill, an album that boasts so much raw energy it should probably come packaged with a complimentary ice pack. It is a delightfully loud, kick you in the face kinda record that completely abandons all acoustic safety protocols, proving that these working-class blokes still know exactly how to turn a simple garage jam into an absolute riot.
The absolute chaos begins with “Fist Fight at the Murder Mart“, a track that sounds exactly like what you would expect to hear if a supermarket discount aisle suddenly mutated into a chaotic, adrenaline-fueled mosh pit. Just when you think your heart rate has leveled out, “Test Your Mettle” slides in like a runaway freight train, powered by a blistering mandolin and a wild banjo that practically dare you to scream along until your vocal cords surrender entirely. Finally, “My Mess, Your Problem” slams into the mix with a wild, theatrical European folk-polka flair that channels a distinct, high-octane Gogol Bordello kind of sound, supercharged by a roaring accordion that keeps the party moving.
In conclusion, This Is Only A Drill is a glorious, beer-soaked reminder that The Killigans are incapable of making a boring record. It is an essential addition to your playlist if you love fast drums, acoustic instruments played at breakneck speeds, you know… that rowdy, fun music we all need and love from time to time, and it solidifies that The Killigans still’ve got it after all these years. Give this album a spin and break some furniture while trying to dance crazily around your house until you need a hospital visit… or at least that’s what happens to me from time to time.
