Arlo Parks has officially ditched the bedroom-pop curtains and stepped directly into the neon light with Ambiguous Desire, and honestly, we should all be sending her a thank-you note. If her previous work was a soft-focus Polaroid, this record is a high-def, 2 a.m. epiphany that pulses with a brand-new kind of confidence. Working with producer Baird, Parks has traded some of her signature “sitting-on-a-quiet-bus” acoustics for modular synths and UK Garage beats that feel like a shot of pure adrenaline. Tracks like “2SIDED” and “Get Go” capture that electric, “will-they-won’t-they” tension of a crowded room with surgical precision, while the Sampha collaboration on “Senses” is a gorgeous, heartbreaking standout that feels both timeless and fresh. It’s an album that manages to be messy, loud, and incredibly life-affirming all at once.
There is truly no better way to survive an early opening shift at Cactus Club than blasting this record through the house speakers. While I’m being “ice guy” and helping to prep the bar for the happy hour crowd with Xtine, Arlo’s voice acts as a much-needed second caffeine hit. “Heaven” hits a different kind of way when you’re sipping a cold brew in an empty venue, watching the dust motes dance in the stage lights before the first patron walks in. It’s the ultimate sonic transition from “I’m too tired to function” to “I am ready to conquer this chalkboard.” ‘Ambiguous Desire‘ is the best co-worker you could ask for your opening crew… It’s soulful, high-energy, and just so good.
