Borrowed Time by Mod Lang

In a world where most bands treat their debut like a sacred text, Detroit’s Mod Lang seems to have approached their latest release, ‘Borrowed Time’ with the breezy confidence of someone who just found a twenty-dollar bill in a pair of old jeans. This record is a masterclass in making the “not trying too hard” sound like a grueling Olympic sport, packed with jittery, melodic indie rock that makes you want to wear a vintage cardigan and start a very polite riot in a public library. The guitars jangle with enough caffeine-fueled energy to power a small Midwestern town, and the vocals possess that classic “I’m definitely cool, but I’m also slightly worried I left the oven on” delivery that defines the best of the genre.
The songwriting is offensively catchy, leaning into a nostalgic 90s college-radio aesthetic without feeling like a dusty museum piece. The opener, “What I Can’t Have,” acts as the record’s emotional and sonic north star, featuring Beatles-meets-Stones melodies that manage to be both yearning and incredibly smug at the same time. Then there is “Cocomoda,” a track that reportedly grew out of a “gibberish jam” and tells a comical tale of a loved one being tossed in jail. It’s the kind of song that proves you can turn a legal disaster into a power-pop anthem if you just have enough reverb and a lack of shame. Meanwhile, “TV Star” serves as a shimmering ode to rock ‘n’ roll mythology, sounding like it was recorded on a reel-to-reel machine that’s seen better days but still knows how to party.
Ultimately, Borrowed Time is the sonic equivalent of that one friend who is incredibly charming despite never owning a matching pair of socks; you want to be annoyed by how effortless it feels, but you’re too busy humming the chorus to actually formulate a complaint. For a band from a city known for its grit, Mod Lang has delivered something surprisingly shimmering and polished, yet they manage to keep just enough dirt under their fingernails to remind you they’re from Detroit. It’s a fantastic, slightly neurotic joyride that proves if you’re going to live on borrowed time, you might as well spend it making some of the most infectious indie pop of the year.
