To really complete the Milwaukee “Frantic Repair” experience, you have to fuel up correctly, and for me, that means a trip to Palomino Bar. Now, in a past life, I would have dove headfirst into a bucket of their famous fried chicken without a second thought. But times change, and I’ve recently become something of a health nut, or at least, that’s what I tell myself while ordering their kick ass Slap Yer Pappy Salad.

It’s the ultimate compromise for the modern fitness enthusiast: a bed of greens that screams “longevity,” topped with just enough of that legendary fried chicken, sliced apples, bacon, chow chow, cheddar, and ranch, to remind you that life is worth living. It’s basically a superfood.

The EP kicks off with tracks like “Blindfolded Driver” and “Suffocate,” which perfectly capture the band’s signature blend of aggressive screamo and twinkly, Midwestern emo precision. Listening to “Overturned Treelines” feels like watching someone try to solve a Rubik’s Cube while falling down a flight of stairs—it’s chaotic, mathematically improbable, and you can’t help but cheer when they land the finish. The guitars chime with that classic Braid-inspired angularity, while the vocals oscillate between “heartfelt diary entry” and “I just stepped on a LEGO,” providing exactly the kind of emotional catharsis we’ve come to expect from the 414 scene.

But as good as the record is, catching Frantic Repair live is where the real “frantic” part happens. Their live shows are notoriously explosive, often featuring enough energy to power a small suburb or at least a very large espresso machine. They play with the kind of reckless abandon that makes you worry for the structural integrity of the venue, yet they never miss a single complicated time-signature shift.

The best part? You basically have no excuse for missing them. Frantic Repair plays live shows with the frequency of a city bus. Whether you’re hanging out at the Cactus Club, grabbing a drink at Bremen Cafe, or wandering into X-Ray Arcade, there is a roughly 90% chance Frantic Repair is currently loading a drum kit onto the stage. They are the unofficial heartbeat of Milwaukee’s DIY circuit, making it remarkably easy to get your fix of high-octane math rock pretty much any night of the week.
