A few years ago, a faithful listener of our podcast slid into our DMS and told me that I had to check out some of the previous releases from a ferocious garage-punk outfit they could not get enough of. Fast forward to today, and I am kicking myself for delaying on this new album, because Woodstock, NY’s very own The Bobby Lees have returned to absolutely melt our faces off with this kick-ass album, New Self. Let me tell you, this record doesn’t just invite you in for a polite listening session; it straight-up kicks you in the teeth and leaves you happily asking for more.
The tracklist is a lean, mean, noise-making machine, but three particular songs stand out on the release as absolute top-tier standouts. First and foremost, “Red Hot” bursts through the speakers with a fiery, blistering energy that commands your full attention and proves to be an absolute top track…. also, the laughter kinda freaked me out, which was perfect when trying to review this album in my apartment all alone on a rainy day. Then you have “Napoleon“, a song so fiercely infectious it will have you marching around your kitchen like a pint-sized French dictator with a serious attitude problem, followed closely by the gritty, unhinged brilliance of the title track, New Self. To top it all off, the band takes on a monumental challenge and covers the classic PJ Harvey track 50 Ft, and let’s be real—they did a pretty damn good job of capturing that towering, fierce spirit while making it entirely their own.
‘New Self‘ stands as a triumphant, high-voltage explosion of raw punk-rock energy that demands your attention. The Bobby Lees have delivered a record that is equal parts dangerous, unpredictable, and wildly fun. Whether you need an aggressive morning wake-up call or just want to jump around wildly, knocking over shit in your living room, this incredible release from this kick-ass Woodstock, NY band is an absolute gift to music lovers everywhere. Check this album out today.
