Lonnie Gunn’s EP called ‘2013 horsemeat scandal’ is a fun fucking album that will have you bouncing around your place with some raw-ass, fuzzed-out rock’n ‘ roll with thick, wall-of-sound guitar tones, heavy distortion, and punchy/driving rhythms. Her vocal delivery shifts seamlessly between nonchalant, spoken-word swagger and gritty, belting hooks, creating a stark contrast against the fuzzy, overdriven arrangements. Ok… got your attention yet?!
As always, I pick out three songs on the album regardless of its length that stood out to me on the release. In this case, it’s an EP, and there are only 7 songs on the album, so here ya go. First up, “Photocopy” kicks things into high gear with a crunchy, rhythmic riff-o-rama that will get your head bobbing around and stuff. Next up… “Babytooth“, which is my favorite at the moment, has that fuzzy guitar feedback that just washes over her raw/expressive vocal takes that is so damn good. Then there’s “Taxidermy Swan,” which is yet another killer track with a sarcastic, deadpan delivery and soaring, melodically distorted guitar solos that ring out and I can’t seem to get out of my skull. It’s not that same old grungey/shoegaze shit everyone’s doing… it’s so damn good.
‘2013 horsemeat scandal‘ packs a solid punch of loud-quiet-loud dynamics, biting lyrical humor, and massive melodies into some powerful ass songs. The vibe of this album feels both beautifully fucked up and yet carefully crafted. Lonnie Gunn truly is legit. This album not only caught me off guard since I had never heard of her, but it also fucking rules. Also, huge thank you for making me revisit that damn headline of a title…. I still can’t believe people probably ate Mr. Ed and stuff… so fucking weird. Be sure to check out this album and give it a spin, and why not go pick yourself up a cheeseburger to go with it? Lastly… since I can’t seem to shut-up… thank you to whoever told me to check this album out when I was 7 deep in cocktails the other night… I’m sure you’re an OK person, and if not… at least you like good music.
