If their 2024 debut was a panicked, beautiful sprint through a burning building, ‘Something Worth Waiting For’ is Friko finally stopping to appreciate the architecture while the fire department handles the rest. Niko Kapetan and Bailey Minzenberger have traded a bit of that “brink of a nervous breakdown” energy for something grander, weirder, and, dare I say, symphonic. It’s the kind of record that makes you want to buy a vintage turtleneck and stare intensely at a rainy windowpane until your roommates ask if you’re okay. It’s loud, it’s hushed, and it feels like a warm hug from a friend who just finished a very long therapy session.
The production by John Congleton adds a layer of “organized chaos” that fits the band like a glove. One minute you’re floating through a delicate, ‘70s-style ballad that sounds like it was recorded in a velvet-lined room, and the next, a wall of noise rock crashes in to remind you that Friko still knows how to shred your eardrums with a smile. It’s a bold evolution that manages to be both more experimental and more melodic at the same time, a rare feat that usually requires a deal with a crossroads demon or at least a lot of caffeine.
Speaking of perfect pairings, this album is the ideal soundtrack for my current obsession: a massive summer hot dog kick. Just as Friko has refined their sound, I’ve narrowed down my elite “Summer Five” franks. Whether I’m cranking “Hot Air Balloon” while grilling up some Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Beef or Usingers Wieners #11, the vibes are unmatched. There’s something about the snap of a Vienna Beef or a Nathan’s Beef that mirrors the crisp percussion on this record, and if you aren’t blasting “Choo Choo” while scribbling the best mustard you have on hand with a little chopped onion on a Klement’s Beef Frank Chicago Style, are you even living? It’s fucking gold, I’m tellin ya!
The title track, “Something Worth Waiting For,” ultimately serves as the emotional payoff, much like that first bite of a perfectly charred dog. When Kapetan sings, “We’re finally where we said we’d go, even if we took the longest road,” it resonates whether you’re talking about musical growth or the quest for the perfect casing. It is a triumphant, noisy, and heartfelt record that proves Friko is one of the most exciting acts in indie rock today—best enjoyed with a side of mustard and a toasted bun.

For all of you who are lucky enough to be able to catch them for a show/signing at our friends on the Eastside at Lilliput Records on Thursday April 30, 2026 from 7 pm-8 pm… have an amazing time. This is one of my favorite indie rock bands right now, and this is such a great record.
