Hold onto your seatbelts, punk rock enthusiasts, because Cincinnati’s favorite remote-working musical agents are back. The post-punk quartet Choncy has given us an incredibly sharp, angular LP titled ‘Trademark‘. Seamlessly ping-ponging phone demos between Ohio and Brooklyn, this band has managed to bottle pure, unpredictable basement-show lightning. It is a wonderfully erratic shift that perfectly balances their hardcore roots with a refreshing plunge into estranged, catchy dissonance.
The record is packed front-to-back with jagged rhythms, but a few tracks stand out as absolute heavy hitters. The frantic energy of “Dressing the Part” delivers a sharp, sarcastic bite that will make you want to dance and break a sweat simultaneously. Then there is “A Dogs Best Man“, a fan-favorite that masterfully blends raw, garage-punk grit with a driving hook you will be humming for days. Finally, “Finance” closes things out beautifully, proving that even a song named after your least favorite corporate spreadsheet can be turned into an absolute post-punk anthem that demands your full attention.
Choncy proves that you do not need to reinvent the wheel to make a record that feels completely vital and exhilarating. ‘Trademark‘ is a beautifully cleaned-off plate of kitchen-sink punk that feels less like a traditional album and more like a high-speed chase through a labyrinth of distorted guitars. It is loud, it is wonderfully sloppy yet precise, and it is easily one of the most fun listening experiences of the year. So, you like fun… I like fun…. now go get the record!!!
