Get ready to scream-cry into your pillow while aggressively dancing around your living room, because Columbus, Ohio’s premier purveyors of “tender Midwestern noise,” Snarls, have blessed our ears with their fantastic EP release, ‘In Heaven There’s Rainbows’. The band perfectly fuses dreamy indie-pop vocals with the kind of crunchy, grunge-infused distortion that makes your inner teenager want to stage-dive off the kitchen counter. It is a wonderfully dramatic explosion of feelings that proves growing up is weird, loud, and incredibly delightful to listen to.
While every single track on this release is pretty fucking great in its own way, here are three that stood out for me after my first listen. First up is “Chemical Control (Spill Your Blood),” a brilliant anthem packed with soaring vocals and a rhythm section so driving it could easily power a small hybrid vehicle. If you need a tune to blast while speeding down the highway or overthinking your life choices, “No Lock, No Prayer” delivers a punchy, fast-paced energy with a hook so ridiculously catchy it should probably come with a public safety warning. Then there is “One Wish“, which wraps you in a cozy blanket of bittersweet harmonies and fuzzy guitars, making you deeply nostalgic for a high school romance you never actually experienced.
‘In Heaven There’s Rainbows‘ is a glorious reminder that Snarls have channeled their DIY basement-rock roots into a fresh, stadium-ready sound that will heal your broken heart while simultaneously forcing you to bounce around your apartment like I did this weekend until you knock over some random shit. I’m definitely glad all you OKR fans messaged us to listen to this EP and to play it on the next show… it’s so good.
