Graham Hunt has officially dropped his sixth full-length record, American Pyramid, out on Run For Cover Records. On this bad boy of a record, Graham Hunt gathered an eight-piece studio band, decamped to Minnesota’s famed Pachyderm Studio, and laid down a breezy, glorious storm of fuzzed-out power pop and hooky-ass indie rock. Graham just keeps building and building some amazing releases, and this is yet another great one. Listening to a record of this scale makes me ponder life’s greatest mysteries, like how the hell people were able to make those big ass pyramids. Moving all those megaton limestone blocks across the desert without any modern machinery just does not add up in my head, which is why I still love watching Ancient Aliens with that guy with the huge hair and shit, and to this day I think aliens were involved in the heavy lifting. You know what I’m saying?!
So, I just ate a handful of edibles before writing this part of the review and decided to pause the record to check out an Ancient Aliens Season 5, Episode 1 just because this album had Pyramid in the title and I may have got lost in my thoughts for a bit when the A.D.D. kicked in, but now I’m back. Just trying to make sure you are on the same page with me as I’m writing this. I normally do so on all my reviews…. I pick out three songs that stood out for me upon my first listen of each release. This one was pretty hard with this album because each song kinda just kicked ass, but here ya go. First off… “Guardian Angel’s Arms” serves as a lush, sparkling gem at the center of the album, perfectly balancing shimmering acoustic strumming, with punchy electric fills that hit with pure, sunshine-tinted euphoria, and that piano and strings and shit…. hell yeah…. so good. Then there is “Getting Older“, easily one of the most addictively satisfying guitar-pop tracks on the release, which delivers tight, driving rhythms, sharp hooks, and grounded lyrics about the hilarious horror of watching the clock tick…. and once again… that piano. Fucking played this one a couple times in a row to be exact… great track. Lastly… “Thank You Mother Squirrel” offers a glorious, minute-long burst of quirkiness that showcases Graham Hunt’s playful eccentricities without missing a single beat. Also that lyric about Shane MacGowan’s teeth is solid gold.
So by this time… I had watched a couple of the cool music videos they had put together on the YouTubes and now I want to get on a Riverboat on the Mississippi,… damn… that looked fucking cool. So thank you to Graham and the gang for such a good journey today with this kick ass album… and I would also like to Thank Mr. edible man for helping me out today.,,, I don’t think I would have eaten that whole Lotzza Motzza cheese pizza with banana peppers and pinneaple chunks on it, or even watched Ancient Aliens again only because I was hyper-fixate on pyramids just from reading the title of American Pyramid.
Actually…. it totally reminds me of that time Sam Reitman caught me outside Cactus Club one day when I went to see a band play. I think it was for Joey Turbo solo stuff, or maybe it was No Motel… Joey was on stage from what I remember, but I was standing out there completely locked up, staring at the ground, kinda just giggling and thinking about whatever and having a smoke, and entirely unable to move my legs correctly after having way too many edibles. So, that being said…. Graham Hunt has made a killer album here with all the bells and whistles. Be sure to give it a spin and pick up your copy of the album with the links provided, or just catch Graham Hunt live w/ Innuendo, and Apollo Vermouth at Cactus Club on Sunday, 09/20/26, for an all-ages show and buy the album there. Doors are at 7:00 pm. Click here to buy your tickets.
