The Itch’s debut, ‘It’s The Hope That Kills You‘, is essentially a neon-drenched panic attack that you can actually two-step to. Simon Tyrie and Georgia Hardy have crafted a record that feels like finding a twenty-dollar bill in the pocket of a jacket you wore to a funeral—it’s grim, it’s unexpected, and it’s a total win. While most modern indie bands are busy staring at their shoelaces and muttering poetry, The Itch crashes the party with a “chainsaw synth” sound that’s less about wallowing in the misery of 2026 and more about setting that misery on fire and dancing around the flames. It’s a gloriously messy, high-energy middle finger to the “everything is fine” facade, delivered with enough DIY grit to keep it authentic.
The album hits its stride early with “No More Sprechgesang!”, a meta-masterpiece that officially declares war on the “talk-singing” trend. It’s hilariously self-aware, with Tyrie basically admitting he’s bored of the very genre he’s often lumped into, all while the music pulses with a frantic, infectious energy that demands you stop thinking and start moving. Then there’s “Aux Romanticiser”, which is easily the most relatable club anthem ever written for people who hate clubs. It captures that specific, chaotic desperation of an amateur DJ trying to save a dying house party with nothing but a dream and a phone cable, turning social awkwardness into a shimmering, electronic riot.
The emotional heart of the record, however, hides in the surprisingly sweet “Drugdealer”. Despite the edgy title, it’s a shimmering, synth-pop love letter that feels like a fever dream version of an 80’s power ballad. It’s a song about the lengths we go to keep the people we love happy, even when the world outside is falling apart, proving that The Itch has as much soul as they do snark. By the time the final track fades out, you’re left with a sense of “gallows humor” euphoria that only a duo this delightfully weird could provide. It’s a debut that doesn’t just ask for your attention; it grabs you by the collar and drags you onto the dance floor.
