‘Clipping’ by Special Friend feels like two best friends decided to turn their living room into a fuzzed-out dream-pop laboratory, and the results are brilliantly addictive. This French-American duo manages to take the “less is more” philosophy and turn it into “less is actually everything,” delivering a record that inspires you to hunt down a vintage Casio and spend the rest of your life crafting great lo-fi/ indie-pop gold while never leaving your pajamas. They’ve successfully bottled the feeling of a sunny afternoon spent doing absolutely nothing productive, and frankly, it’s one of the most productive things I’ve heard all year.

Three tracks on this record that first caught my attention and are in my ever-rotating playlists are…. First, “Breakfast” is a joyous, effervescent outburst where they sweetly sing, “I don’t mind, If you’re late for breakfast,” proving that even a missed meal can be a vibe. Then there’s the title track, “Clipping,” where layered guitars and harmonized vocals swirl around the dreamy repetition of, “It’s just a clipping, of a memory,” creating a sound that’s both intimate and spacious. Finally, “Isolation” takes a quieter, more introspective turn, capturing that fuzzy solitude with the line, “Isolation, is a destination,” reframing loneliness as a pretty decent place to hang out for a while.

Overall, this collection is a brilliantly fuzzy, jangle-poppy hug that proves you don’t need a 50-piece orchestra to make a massive impact. Erica Ashleson and Guillaume Siracusa have created something that feels both nostalgic and totally fresh, like finding a forgotten Polaroid that somehow still smells like salt air. It’s warm, it’s witty, and it’s arguably the best reason to stop listening to the news and start listening to indie-pop. Just do yourself a favor and pick yourself up a copy of this record. It’s so good… and you deserve something nice for yourself.
